Background

Distributing throughout the UK, this leading national food service company has an enviable reputation within the catering industry for their reliability, quality and flexibility. Their agile operation seamlessly adapts to support each customers’ business; some requiring produce sourced within a particular geographical radius and others ordering entirely British produce.

Project

Following significant growth, the current warehouse operation was running at maximum capacity. In order to meet demand, Davies & Robson Consultants carried out a detailed review of their chilled chamber utilisation in order to identify space improvement opportunities.

Challenge

  • The current operation involves 70,000 cases/1,000 pallets received daily
  • 300 Warehouse Operatives
  • Operates 24 hours/day  6.5 days/week with late order cut offs at 11.00pm for overnight/next-day delivery

Results

Davies & Robson consultants developed solutions for a number of potential areas of improvement. One of our experienced interim managers was then appointed to implement these solutions; improving operational performance and resilience in peak periods:

  • Conveyor project  eliminated overtime, improved morale, maintained service
  • Frozen project – redefined process, outsourced storage and eliminated £100K wastage
  • Depot stockholding  reduce trailer overspills and maximised trunk vehicle utilisation
  • Software upgrade for Picking arm-scanners and Truck mounted tablets
