SimplyCook: Warehouse Process Improvements & Relocation

BACKGROUND

SimplyCook began business in 2014 through a concept devised by their founder and CEO, Oli Ashness, who was living and working in London. Determined to eat a high quality, healthy meal in the evenings, his busy lifestyle left little time to create great food for himself and his friends, and he realised how time consuming and expensive it was to try new recipes and put good food on the table. A few months later he started work on solving this problem. The result was the launch of SimplyCook.com

PROJECT

Following significant growth (100% YOY) Oli identified a requirement to improve processes, increase capacity and strengthen the management team in the warehouse – and to move to a new larger facility.

With the increased volumes, approaching peak and imminent warehouse move, Oli required support to ensure the stability of customer service and margins during the changes. Following guidance from Davies & Robson on how best to achieve the quick results needed, Steve was appointed as interim manager to identify and implement the improvements required, project manage the relocation and provide guidance on the team structure.

RESULTS

After an initial assessment of the operation and the team, Steve made recommendations and improved the warehouse layout and processes. He quickly achieved a position of steady-state, meeting KPIs, and identified stronger team members for supervisory roles. In parallel he also project managed the relocation and developed infrastructure initiatives for the new facility.

Despite the combined complexity of the clearance of back orders, increased demand and the move, he stabilised the operation and team and managed a seamless site relocation that now picks more than twice the previous number of orders with the same sized workforce - and with the capacity to achieve even more. The team is now managed by an original member of the workforce identified during the process.
