The Logistics Recruitment Challenge

The Logistics Recruitment Challenge

Why is it so difficult to fill senior positions within the logistics function?

With the growth in logistics related degrees, and training programmes, logistics managers have never been better qualified. Yet the primary challenge remains; finding candidates that match the increasingly specialised job requirements of senior management roles.

Inevitably part of the reason is the delayering of organisational structures, no longer providing a direct path to the top. Also of importance are the extensive range of skills and experience required; particularly in small to medium sized organisations where the logistics manager is a one man band.

Unfortunately, finding an individual with all the skill required is extremely difficult. Project managers and IT specialists may not take easily to managing drivers and warehouse staff and vice versa.  Similarly, managers who revel in immediate challenges may struggle preparing a five-year strategic plan.

So, what’s the answer?

Perseverance in finding the candidate that ticks all the boxes may pay off but can often end in failure with disappointment and possible acrimony.

The alternative is to take a more holistic approach to the job specification and recruitment process:

  • The first question to ask is what are the absolute minimum skills and experience required by the job holder?
  • Secondly, could some of the other skills be fulfilled in a different way particularly if they are only required on an occasional basis?
  • Could the proposed role be supported by other people in the organisation?
  • For specialist technical skills that are unlikely to be routinely utilised, would consultancy or interim management support be a better and more realistic solution? Creating a position more focussed and uncompromising on the operational management or leadership of the role.

Here at Davies & Robson we believe in not only understanding the ideal profile of the individual that an organisation is trying to recruit but also the organisational context. We will provide an honest assessment of the challenge in finding the ideal candidate but will also explore possible alternative ways to meet the organisational needs.

The ideal outcome is finding an individual that is confident and motivated in their new role whilst ensuring that both the short and long term needs of the organisation are being met.
